No transport
protest in Negros today

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The United Negros Drivers and Operators Center is not joining the national transport protest led by PISTON (Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide) today, but is planning a strike at a later date, UNDOC Secretary General Jesse Ortega said yesterday.

PISTON and its allied organizations in Regions 3, 4A, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, Cordeliera Administrative Region and the National Capital Region are holding caravans today to the head offices of oil giants Chevron, Shell and Petron where they will stage protest actions.

They will be airing their sentiments against the overpricing of oil products and will be reiterating their call for a rollback in gasoline by P9, and diesel products by P8.

Ortega said that they have already informed PISTON that they are not joining the protest today as they do not have enough time to prepare but they hopes the oil companies will heed the demands of the transport sector.

UNDOC is planning a well-coordinated transport strike against the oil price disparity in Negros Occidental but has yet to finalize the date, Ortega said.

Meanwhile, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares in a press statement sent to the DAILY STAR yesterday urged consumers to launch a people’s initiative to repeal the Oil Deregulation Law considering that it has caused so much price increases in oil products and has not served its purpose.

Colmenares, a Bacoleño, said it will be a parallel initiative to Congressional action on bills filed by Bayan Muna and the progressive block in Congress to repeal the oil deregulation law.

About four million signatures are needed for the petition to force Comelec to conduct a referendum and once majority of the votes are in favor of the petition in that referendum, the Oil Deregulation law will be repealed, he said.

Colmenares said that those who want to sign up on line for the initiative may visit www.twitter.com/BMvsOPH.*APN
