Col. Manuel Luis Ochotorena, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Negros Oriental, has directed his officers and men to stay focused in accomplishing their mission in fighting the insurgency in the province.

“With the turn of events, we cannot afford to fall into complacency as we have the people of Negros Oriental to serve and protect,” said Ochotorena as the many Filipinos woke up yesterday morning to shocking news of the passing away of former Secretary of National Defense Angelo Reyes.

Media reports say Reyes, who was involved in a scandal involving billions of pesos of government funds, sustained a single gunshot wound on his chest and died at a hospital in Metro Manila.

Officials from Sta. Rosa in Laguna province, Cebu City, Lapu-lapu City and the municipality of Cordova, all in Cebu province, are scheduled this month for a familiarization tour to the septage waste treatment facilities in Dumaguete and Bayawan cities in Negros Oriental.

The tour is in aid of legislation for these local governments who are being urged to adopt and implement sewerage and septage management programs under the Clean Water Act of 2004, to protect water resources, public health and the economy, Lisa Kircher Lumbao, Chief of Party of the Philippine Sanitation Alliance, said.

Communities in far-flung areas from Canlaon City to Mabinay will soon have electricity after the Department of Energy has chosen the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative 1 as one of the pilot electric cooperatives nationwide to receive the Solar Homes System Unit.

General manager Juveleo Acabal of NORECO 1 said that the cooperative is expected to receive 300 units of the system, valued at P35,000 each totaling P10.5 million.

Acabal said the units will be installed for free in far-flung unenergized areas covered by NORECO 1 that have a cluster of households, acting like an alternative renewable energy. “Owners of these houses will not have to pay anything for the unit. They will however have a flat rate of around P200 each month,” he said.
