‘Policeman’
selling gun nabbed
A fake policeman was arrested by real ones for alleged gun running at Nueva Street, Bacolod City, at about 12:10 p.m. yesterday.
John Raniel Batacandulo, 28, of Barotac Viejo town in Iloilo and a resident of Purok Bulak in Brgy. Mandalagan, was presented by Station 1 policemen to Bacolod City Police officer-in charge, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz.
De la Paz said Batacandulo was arrested in a buy-bust operation when he allegedly sold a .358 caliber revolver to a real policeman in exchange for P5,000.
Station 1 intelligence operative, Police Officer 2 Joshua Barile, said they initially transacted with Batacandulo, who was still wearing a blue police athletic t-shirt at the Bacolod Public Plaza
Barile said he, Police Officer 2 Johnny dela Peña and the Bacolod City Anti-Crime Task Force conducted the buy-bust operation on information from their asset that Batacandulo was illegally selling a gun.
When interrogated by de la Paz, Batacandulo admitted that he was selling an illegal gun as he needed money for his training fee at the VMA Global College.
Batacandulo said the gun came from a certain “Allan” of Kabankalan, whom he met two days ago in front of Robinson’s Place Bacolod in Mandalagan, who told him that he will give him share if it is sold.
He added that “Allan” gave him the police athletic t-shirt to wear so will not be apprended.
Charges for gun running and usurpation of authority are being readied against Batacandulo, who is now detained at Police Station 1.*APN

Trike driver robbed,
stabbed by minors
A tricycle driver is now in critical condition after seven minors, who robbed him of his cash and cellular phone, stabbed him in Brgy. 3, Bacolod City, at about 1:45 a.m. yesterday.
The victim was Jomar Oñates, 25, of Villa Georgina Subdivision in Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod, Chief Inspector Noel Polines, Bacolod Police Station 2 chief, said.
Three of the seven minors were arrested in a follow-up operation by Station 2 policemen in Purok Tahong, Brgy. 3, while the other suspects were able to escape.
The arrested minors, whose names are being withheld by the DAIY STAR, aged 13, 14 and 16 are residents of Purok Santo Niño in Brgy. 3.
Initial investigation conducted by Police Officer 1 Leomel Guinanao showed that Oñates had just brought a passenger to Purok Tahong when the minors boarded his tricycle, held him up and took his cellular phone and P1,200 in cash.
The minors ganged up on Oñates and stabbed him when he fought back, a police report said. Oñates sustained multiple stab wounds and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, where he is now confined, Polines said.
The suspects were presented to Oñates at the hospital and he positively identified them. Oñates’ cellular phone was also recovered by the police from the suspects, Polines added.
Aside from robbery, he said, these minors are also involved in other crimes like snatching and “salisi” theft incidents especially in the area covered by Police Station 2 and have been in and out of the Social Development Center.
One of the suspects admitted to the DAILY STAR that they held up and stabbed Oñates. His older brother, who is also a minor, is their leader, the minor said.
Polines is inviting victims of robbery hold-up, snatching and “salisi” theft incidents to visit their station and identify the suspects so they can file charges against them.*APN
