Security coordination lauded
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Chief Supt. Jaime Calungsud Jr. of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Visayas lauded the security coordination and measures of law enforcement agencies in Negros Oriental, during his recent orientation on Target Hardening and Inspection of Vital Installations.

Calungsud stressed the importance of ensuring strict security measures in all vital installations in the province such as the geothermal plants of the Energy Development Corporation in Valencia; Orica Nitrates plant in Bacong; Tambobo bay in Siaton; and airport and seaports, among others.

He challenged the police, military and other law enforcement agencies to strengthen their coordination, especially with the growing number of local and foreign tourists coming to Negros Oriental.

One of the concerns he raised was the security measures implemented in the flying school at the Dumaguete City airport.  He suggested that there be an evaluation and background check, especially of foreign students enrolled at the flying school, to dispel the notion that Dumaguete is becoming the training ground for future terrorists.

Insp. Jose Esparcia of the Philippine Civil Aeronotics Service said, they have been coordinating with the PNP Provincial Command in terms of airport security. They are also submitting the lists of students at the flying school to the national headquarters, Esparcia added.

Provincial police director Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas said a team of Special Weapons and Tactics is on mobile patrol at the Dumaguete airport during scheduled flights. He added that his office is evaluating the names and background of the students of the school.*MA
