Capitol may
downsize personnel

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The reorganization of Negros Occidental provincial government employees this year is likely to include downsizing of personnel, some of whom have already expressed interest in early retirement, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

Employees who may be affected  by the downsizing will be properly  compensated, the governor said.

The Negros Occidental provincial government has 2,260 personnel, 1,884 of whom are permanent and 376 casuals.

Marañon said he is hiring a consultant from Manila with a track record and who will be more objective in making recommendations on the reorganization.

The Provincial Engineer’s Office has too many employees and will be among the departments to be subjected to downsizing, the governor said.

In fact one engineer has already opted for early retirement, he added.

On the other hand, under the reorganization more health personnel will be hired to meet the needs of  provincial government-run hospitals.

The governor said doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists, medical technicians are among those needed.

“We can not attract good people if we don’t give good compensation and security of tenure,” he said, adding that right now many of those working in the health services department are contractual employees.

JAIL

Meanwhile, the Maranon also said that new Negros Occidental provincial jail in Barangay Tabunon, Bago will be completed by the end of May and not April as earlier disclosed.

The new jail will be turned over by the provincial government to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology that will manage its operations.

PANAAD

The provincial government will also tap outside help for the expansion of the Panaad Sports Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, the governor also said.

Marañon said he has spoken to Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, who has offered to help Negros Occidental source funding for the stadium.

The stadium that currently has a capacity of about 18,000 can be expanded to 30,000, the governor said.

The governor denied that the seats  in the stadium shake when it is full of  people as alleged by some during the recent match between the Philippine Azkals and the Mongolian national team.*CPG
