Basay tops 5 areas tagged
as illegal logging hotspots

The municipality of Basay tops the list of five illegal logging hotspots in central and southern Negros Oriental identified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Mabinay ranks next to Basay, followed by Sibulan, Sta. Catalina and Siaton, Mario Aragon, Community Environment and Natural Resources Office II chief, said yesterday.
Reports of rampant illegal cutting of trees and “kaingin” – a slash-and-burn method either for shifting cultivation or firewood, have been received by the CENRO II in the natural forests and forest plantations in these areas.
| IN BAYAWAN Negros Oriental provincial police director, Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, said yesterday they cannot prove public speculation and insinuations that the police officer who was arrested in Bayawan City last week for alleged shabu peddling and for illegal possession of firearms is untouchable because of his close association with a scion of a known politician in the south. Lawas said he received information that PO2 Victorio Rizaldo was a former security guard of a security agency whose services have been engaged by the politician being alluded to. |
