Solo exhibits by three young artists from Negros --  Burog Alvarado, Hilario “Doods” Campos III and Roderick Tijing -- open   at the Negros Museum in Bacolod City Saturday.

 The exhibits  will showcase  the “Face (Nawung)” by Alvarado, the “Invasion” by Campos and  “Dreamscapes 2” by Tijing, a press release from the Negros Museum in Bacolod City said.

As different as each of their styles, hues and colors, these three artists brought in their recent works to bring to a full circle the face of the new artists in Bacolod and Negros, it said.

The exhibits will open at the 6 p.m. Saturday at the Museum Lobby, Museum Gallery and the PHINMA Gallery of The Negros Museum. The shows will run until March 25.

3 Filipino artists
set mall concert

World-class Filipino tenor Abdul Candao, internationally acclaimed Filipino soprano Nenen Espina, and renowned concert pianist Mary Anne Espina will perform for the National Arts Month celebration, at the Northwing Event Centre of SM City Bacolod, 4 p.m. Friday,  a press release from the mall said.

Abdul’s operatic repertoire include Mengone, Baron Kronthal, Conte Belfiore, Ferrando, Chateauneuf, Faust, Pinkerton, Max, Cavaradossi, Radames,, Turiddu, and the Prince in “Rusalka”. His roles in operetta include Graf von Luxemburg, Dr. Siedler, Stanislaus, Der Zarewitsch, Prince Sou Chong, the Governor in “Candide” and both Alfred and Eisenstein in “Die Fledermaus”.  He is now a resident of Vienna, Austria, the press release said.

Mary Anne Espina, a 2007 Aliw Awardee for the Best Instrumentalist Category, has been featured in the Filipino Artists Series at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and has performed as soloist of the UST Symphony Orchestra with Herminigildo Ranera, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Oscar Yatco, Filharmonica under conductor Gerald Salonga and the Manila Symphony Orchestra with Arturo Molina.

Nenen Espina has performed with well-renowned conductors Basilio Manalo, Herminigildo Ranera, Jonathan Velasco, Yaacov Bergman, Takuo Yuwaza, Lim Yau, Leif Bjaland and Chino Toledo, the press release said.

She has collaborated with artists Fr. Manuel Maramba, Mary Ann Espina, Najib Ismael, Peter Porticos, Ruben Reyes and Butch Roxas. She has sung the role of Suzuki in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”, Santuzza in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”, Rosina in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Seviglia”, Dorabella in Mozart’s “Cosi fan Tutte”, to name just a few, the press release added.*

Lasallians adopt program
on road injury prevention

The University of St. La Salle National Service Training Program hosted a road traffic safety and injury prevention awareness orientation at the Mini-Auditorium of USLS recently, a press release from the school in Bacolod City said.

The program was chaired by Lorna Lagumbay and assisted by class facilitators, Anabelle Magbanua and Fauna Rebenito.

The orientation included talks, audio-visual aids and short film presentations, and group interactions, involving first and second year college students from three classes coming from the Commerce, Engineering, Arts, Nursing, and Education departments.

The Importance of Road Traffic Safety Awareness was presented by Lagumbay.

 Resource person was May Altarejos-Cueva of Project Community Activities Reaching to Everyone through Services, who presented the WHO Global Statistics Report and the 5 Key Proven Interventions, Role of Youths and Stakeholders, and highlights of the global launch of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, the press release said.

Volunteer Mona Hilton facilitated in the group activity “Road Safety, Whose Job Is It?” The program capped with a Declaration of Support for road safety as the participants offered candles to Project C.A.R.E.S. dedicated to all victims of road crashes. The candles collected will be lighted during the global launch of the decade on May 11, the press release said.

Project C.A.R.E.S. celebrated its 11th year of community service on Feb. 15, and has adopted the theme, “Love life, Save lives!” for this year.  

Schools are encouraged to avail of the road traffic safety and injury prevention orientations before the schoolyear ends in March, considering that young people are generally out of their homes vacationing or going to the malls and therefore, vulnerable to roads and streets hazards if they are not road traffic safety conscious, the press release said. 

High school and college students are invited to join the “Youths for Road Safety” program.  A road safety forum and training will be conducted in the summer for the committed young people, aged 15-21 years old, to become qualified members of the Youths for Road Safety Volunteer Speakers Bureau.

 off to FYDP contests4

Nine students will represent Negros Occidental in various contests for the Regional Achievement and Recognition Day of the Western Visayas 4-H Club Youth Development Program, Feb. 25-27, in Iloilo City, Ma. Elena Gumban, provincial Farm Youth and Development Program (FYDP) coordinator of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said Friday.

Contestants are Margarita Embalsado of San Carlos City – Corn-based Kakanin Cooking; Nico Maria Lozada of Manapla - Poster-Making; Jully Santillan of Pontevedra – Chevon Cooking; Melecio Mellizo of Pulupandan – Rice-based Handicraft; John Paul Torrechilla of San Enrique – Extemporaneous Speech; Cyndi Joy Cañete of Kabankalan City – Vocal Solo; Melendy Jimenez of La Carlota City – 4-H Dream Girl; Vito Binondo of Cauayan – Organic Fertilizer-Making; and Jeron Velasco of La Castellana – Quiz Bee.

Students qualified in the provincial elimination round held recently at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City, Gumban said.

The FYDP is a major component of the Philippine Medium Term Youth Development Program that helps develop farm-based enterprise among rural youth and improves their productivity.

The OPA through the  FYDP has also helped young farmers  go to  Japan to undergo agricultural training under the Young Filipino Farmers Training Program, sponsored by the National Agriculture and Fisheries Council of the Department of Agriculture, Gumban also said.

Recently, host farmers from Japan visited Elmor Juanitas, one of the YFFTP beneficiaries who was recognized as the outstanding young farmer of the province and of Western Visayas, she added.

Juanitas was also chosen as the Magsasaka-Siyentista of the OPA Farmers' Information and Technology Services Center by the Western Visayas Agriculture Resources Research and Development Consortium in 2006.*LTG
