Acting Gov. Roel Degamo has approved the purchase of container vans to be used as temporary wards for patients admitted at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City as requested by Integrated Provincial Health Officer Dr. Dante Domingo.

Domingo said they need at least 10 40-footer container vans to be used as accommodation rooms for patients. Each container van, which is already fully furnished, will cost at least P100,000.

Degamo said air-conditioning units will be needed to make them more comfortable for patients.

Domingo had said he is worried about the increasing patient population of NOPH as the space is getting smaller, because of the on going demolition of its central block building.

Domingo said the present population has reached 140 patients compared to last year with only 104.

Degamo instructed provincial budget officer Marichu Alpuerto and provincial treasurer Danilo Mendez to allocate funds for the container vans.

Architect Almagro had suggested to Domingo the purchase of container vans since it can also be utilized as stock, records or office space.

Some businessmen have been utilizing container vans as convenience store and office.  Silliman University is the pioneer in using container van as basic structure of its housing units and writer’s retreat house in Valencia town.*MA
