BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A city councilor of Bayawan City cheated death on New Year’s Day when the gun used by his assailants conked out and did not fire.

Councilor Victoriano Alabastro was shot by motorcycle riding men in Bayawan City on New Year’s eve but the two suspects fled on foot when the gun did not fire, leaving behind their Kymco motorcycle on the road.

Bayawan City police chief, Maj. Errol Garchitorena, said in an interview that the police is digging into the motive of the foiled attempt on the life of Alabastro who is a lawyer.

Degamo to harmonize operations
vs. anti-illegal quarrying in NegOr

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW & JUANCHO GALLARDE

Negros Oriental acting Gov. Roel Degamo yesterday ordered agencies involved in the enforcement of laws and ordinances on sand and gravel quarrying to harmonize their operations.

Degamo said he wants to stop animosities between the Provincial Attorney’s Office and the Environment and Natural Resources Division.

This was after the ENRD reported that it was able to collect about P5.8 million in fees in the past year, up by about 30 percent from 2009.

RaSSFiP implementation suspended
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Manager Francisco Lorico of the Provincial National Food Authority in Negros Oriental yesterday said the implementation of the Rapid Seed Supply Financing Project is temporarily suspended, in line with a memorandum from the Department of Agriculture.

The RaSSFiP is a program that aims at helping rice farmers by providing a quality seed for them, especially those affected by drought, floods and pest infestation.

Lorico said Negros Oriental still has P3 million available for the RaSSFiP, since the DA ordered a suspension of the program.
