The Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. based in Bacolod City is the Visayan DAILY STAR’s unanimous choice for 2010 Newsmaker of the Year for its work that has brought global honor to Negros Occidental and the Philippines.

It was a bumper year for AIDFI that won the BBC World Challenge  on November 29,  besting 800 other projects worldwide for its ram pump project, “The Only Way is Up,” which  uses the power of a river’s flow to literally push water uphill without any other energy source.

On Nov. 18, AIDFI’s entry “Running Water Uphill” also won the Community Initiative Award at the Energy Institute Awards held in London.

Auke Idzenga, AIDFI chief executive officer, described receiving the BBC award as “a very special moment for AIDFI, the Philippines and myself.”

The ram pump can save both hours of back-breaking work carrying water uphill, and cash where expensive water pumps are replaced.  AIDFI has introduced the pump to over 170 villages and has plans to spread the benefits far and wide among poor communities, the BBC said of the AIDFI.*CPGomez

Radio network holds top level
management conference 2011

Bombo Radyo Philippines is holding its Top Level Management Conference 2011 that started yesterday and will end Friday in its birthplace, Iloilo City, on the theme “Bombo Ang Radyo Ko!,” a press release from the network said.

Every start of the year, senior officers, area and station managers of the radio network make their annual trek from 24 areas all over the country where it operates these stations, for a week-long strategic planning session.
