English language fest held

Thirteen private schools participated in the 7th ANOPSSAI English Language Festival on the theme, “English Language Festival and the International Year of the Youth”, at the Madeleine Academy in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, Wednesday, a press release from the school said.

Participating schools were Binalbagan Catholic College, Fellowship Baptist School Inc., San Blas Academy Inc., Southern Negros College, Fundamental Baptist Christian School, Hinigaran Institute Inc., Madeleine Academy, La Consolacion College, Nuestra Señora De Las Nieves School, San Ramon Catholic School Inc., Stella Marris Academy, San Isidro Academy, and St. Vincent Grade School and High School.

Madeleine Academy, with its principal, Joanna Canincia, was declared over-all champion. BCC was first runner-up, while FBS, SMA, and SVHS were second, third, and fourth runners-up, respectively.

Present at the event were PRISSAP and ANOPSSAI Region VI president, Pastor Ezekiel Guanzon, and Prof. Jose Mongcal, regional coordinator and organizer of ELF.

All the first place winners will represent Cluster III in the English Language Festival-Provincial Level on January 21, in Bacolod City, the press release added.*

Medical-surgical mission
slated in Sagay, Escalante

The Negros Occidental government, through the Economic Enterprise Development Department-Hospital Operations Division, in cooperation with the International Surgical Health Initiative group, will hold a medical-surgical mission in Escalante City from February 1 to 4, and Sagay City from February 7 to 11, a Capitol press release said. 

ISHI is a non-profit organization composed of volunteer surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, who have conducted international work outside the United States, including the Philippines, for the first time.

The group will be providing free surgical operations for hernia, gallstones removal, hemorrhoids, intestinal surgery, and breast diseases, among others to prospective patient-beneficiaries, the press release said. 

Initial screening is ongoing at the Vicente Gustilo District Hospital in Escalante City, Alfredo Marañon Sr. Memorial Hospital in Sagay City, Calatrava District Hospital, and the Sagay City Health Office.

BFP building blessed

Bacolod City Fire Station personnel spearheaded by Fire Marshal, C/Insp. Pamela Rojane Candido, rendered a New Year’s courtesy call on Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, and Councilor Elmer Sy, chairman of the Committee on Fire and Disaster, at the Government Center, recently, a press release from BCFS said.

They discussed the Automatic Fire Suppression System, currently on status quo, awaiting the Recommendation from Interior and Local Government Secretary Jessie Robredo.

Some recommendations given include the two-year moratorium on AFSS to all existing buildings. The rest may continue with the processing of their business permits in the one-stop shop at the Government Center which started Monday, the press release said.

Leonardia asked the BCFS to intensify its fire safety inspection especially in all boarding houses and dormitories in Bacolod City. He emphasized that BFP should see to it that function rooms, movie houses and other public places of assembly must have  swing-out doors to avoid fire incidents, the press release said.

The mayor had requested from Robredo one unit firetruck and looks forward to activate additional fire sub-station in the northern part of Bacolod City, to augment the firefighting operations of BCFS, the press release said.

Insps. Publio Ploteña, Jenny Mae Masip, and Jovelyn Zamar, and sub-station supervisors, were present during the courtesy call, the press release added.*

PICPA seminar scheduled

The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants Negros Occidental chapter will conduct a seminar on Proper Preparation and Presentation of 2010 Financial Statements Jan. 21 to 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Planta Hotel, Araneta Street, Bacolod City, a PICPA press release said.
