Town to declare 9 brgys  
under ‘state of calamity’

Mayor David Albert Lacson yesterday said nine barangays of E.B. Magalona town in Negros Occidental that were hit by floods will be placed under a state of calamity, so they can avail of funds for clearing and declogging of waterways in the affected areas.

Expected to be placed under state of calamity, after its declaration, is approved by the Sangguniang Bayan of E.B. Magalona during its regular session next week are barangays 2 and 3 poblacion, Tabigue, Latasan, Pasil, Sa Jose, Santo Niño, Nanca and Damgo.

There are 3,153 families in E.B. Magalona affected by the flashfloods, with one fatality recorded.

The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian initially placed the damage to livestock and poultry products in E.B. Magalona, cities of Silay, Talisay and Victorias at P893,890, while the damage to fishery products and agricultural crops was pegged at P10.8 million.

Residents of Brgy. Nanca in E.B. Magalona urged the provincial government of Negros Occidental to immediately repair the barangay bridge, which remains impassable to vehicles until now.

Lacson, who met with barangay captains of the affected areas in E.B. Magalona, yesterday also bared plans to create a search-and-rescue group, the members of which will come from each barangay.

Records of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development showed that the floods damaged and destroyed 243 houses, affecting 14,177 families, and leaving two dead from drowning.*GPB
