IN NEG. OR.
Task Force Kasaligan
busts illegal drugs ring

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A suspected illegal drugs syndicate operating in Negros Oriental is believed busted following a series of operations and the arrest of at least three suspected drug pushers on Thursday.

Task Force Kasaligan, composed of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and other law enforcement agencies, swooped down on the suspects in separate sting operations hours apart from each other in Dumaguete and in Tanjay City, provincial police director, Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, said.

The series of anti-illegal drug operations started Thursday afternoon with the voluntary offer of self-confessed drug users Matthew Vincoy and Cassandra Correos to arrange for a drug transaction with Farrell Catan, a suspected drug pusher, said Special Agent Miguel Dungog of the NBI.

Police personnel set to undergo
regular training on marksmanship

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Philippine National Police personnel in Negros Oriental will have to undergo regular marksmanship training to improve their skills in the handling and use of firearms.

PNP and civil authorities noted the need to conduct at least a quarterly proficiency firing refresher course, after only seven out of the 29 police personnel of Dauin town passed the handgun and familiarization precision training, which formed part of the seven-day Back-to-Basic program that ended yesterday.

The trainees used short firearms such as .45 caliber and 9-mm handguns during the proficiency firing course.

‘Pre-requisite’ for
mayor’s permit scored

Businessmen are allegedly complaining about a prerequisite before obtaining a mayor’s permit to do business in Dumaguete City.

Vice Mayor Alan Gel Cordova yesterday said concerns were raised by applicants on the requirement to enroll with the PAG-IBIG, before a mayor’s permit is issued by the mayor.

A few months ago, the City Council granted the mayor  authority to enter into a memorandum of agreement with national government agencies, in effect requiring business applications to comply first with the mandate of the law. However, the grant of such authority was general in nature, and did not specifically say that a PAG-IBIG clearance be made  a requirement prior to the issuance of a mayor’s permit, Cordova  said.
