Add’l ECOLA starts July 16
BY LISA GAPAC

The Department of Labor and Employment in Western Visayas yesterday reminded employers about the implementation of the P12 emergency cost of living allowance that took effect July 16.

DOLE regional director Crispin Dannug Jr. said the P12 ECOLA is added to the daily wage of all minimum wage earners, that was approved by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-6 on May 25, 2011.

The ECOLA was approved due to supervening conditions in the region as prices of petroleum products, fare of public utility jeepneys, and basic goods increased by an average of P4, Dannug said.

The ECOLA is effective until October, after which, the board will evaluate and review the supervening conditions that caused the issuance of the allowance, he stressed.

This covers all minimum wage earners in the private sector, regardless of their position, designation, and status of employment but does not cover household or domestic helpers, persons in the personal service of another including family drivers, and workers registered with Barangay Micro Business Enterprises with Certificates of Authority, he added.

Dannug also asked all employers to visit their nearest DOLE office for the proper computation and formula of the ECOLA.*LTG
