Chief magistrate
for Visayas named

MANILA -- The Court of Appeals has appointed its new chief magistrate in Cebu who will lead the handling of cases in the whole Visayas.

Under Office Order No. 206-11-ABR of CA Presiding Justice Andres Reyes Jr., it designated Associate Justice Pampio Abarintos as the Acting Executive Justice and Acting Chairman of the 18th Division in the CA Visayas.

Abarintos will replace Associate Justice Portia Alino Hormachuelos, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 on July 23, 2011, as a Magistrate and Executive Justice of the CA Visayas.

"In view of the compulsory retirement of Executive Justice Portia Alino-Hormachuelos on July 23, 2011, Justice Pampio Abarintos shall be the Acting Executive Justice and Acting Chairman of the Eighteenth Division of Court of Appeals--Cebu Station," the order said.

At present, the CA Visayas has three divisions, otherwise known as the "Divisions 18 to 21".

There are now nine justices in Cebu.

Abarintos was a former law professor and a former trial judge of the Regional Trial Court (RTC).

He was born in Mabini, Batangas on Dec. 14, 1943 to parents Pedro Abarintos and Miguela Abu (both deceased) who were ordinary farm workers.

He is married to Rosenda Comia, a nurse, and they have three children.*PNA
