Ramon Peñalosa, the Magsasaka Siyentista of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said in an interview recently that a good venture for swine farmers going commercial is to set up their own feed mill and formulate their own feeds using available and indigenous materials like corn bran.

Peñalosa said that producing his own probiotic feeds, he pays only half the price of a kilo of feed for every pig per day. He said this brings big savings since the commercial feeds are priced at P25 per kilo.

He also encouraged backyard swine raisers to create a group or cluster to get a bigger market adding that buyers buy in canter-size where one truck of feeds could fill 30 heads of pigs where the profit can be as much as P1,000 daily per pig.

Price control pushed
for more commodities

The House committee on trade and industry has approved a bill which would subject potable water in containers, noodles, fruits, household liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene to automatic price controls during severe shortages, calamities and similar emergencies, a press release from Congress said.

House Bill 4801 is an expanded version of a measure originally introduced by House Deputy Majority Leader and Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, proposing to classify bottled drinking water as a basic necessity to safeguard consumers against possible pricing abuses during disasters and other adversities.

Under the Price Act, or Republic Act 7581, prices of all "basic necessities" are instantly frozen whenever a locality is declared a disaster area, in a state of calamity, under an emergency or martial law, or in a state of rebellion, the press release said.
