The search is on for the “pinaka” in crops and fisheries organized for the Farmers and Fisherfolk Achievers Day on April 9, at the Panaad Stadium and Park in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, a press release from the Office of Provincial Agriculturist said.

“Pinaka” in Hiligaynon, the dialect spoken by most Negrosanons, is a prefix that means “superlative” or “the most.”         

OPA’s specifications for the variety and minimum weight of each crop entry for the contest include banana – mature, saba 40kg/bunch and lacatan 20kg/bunch; mango – mature, carabao, 500g/piece; papaya – ripe, any variety, 3kg/pc; jackfruit – ripe, any variety, 20kg/pc; and watermelon – ripe, any variety, 7kg/pc;

For ampalaya – immature, any variety, 400g/pc; eggplant – immature, any variety, 250g/pc; squash – mature, any variety, 6kg/pc; tomato – mature, any variety, 100g/pc; string beans – immature, any variety, 0.8 meters in length; camote – any variety, 400g/pc; and ube – any variety, 10kg/pc.

Crop entries will be submitted for weighing on April 3, at the OPA Demo Farm back of the Provincial Capitol Building in Gatuslao Street, Bacolod City, Dina Genzola, event chairperson, said in the press release.   

Live bangus entries should come from fishponds, pens or cages where the extensive-modified and semi-intensive culture system is practiced. 

Participants will be bangus raisers in the province. 

They will submit their final entries with accompanying fishpond profile and other available records certified by the representative of their local government units as well as personnel of OPA Fisheries Section.  Sabalo is not allowed. 

The entry with the highest average body weight will be declared the winner, the press release said. 

Live tilapia entries should come from freshwater fishponds, pens or cages that use the backyard and extensive-modified culture or small-scale system. 

Participants will be freshwater tilapia raisers in the province. 

Final entries including fishpond profile and other available records will be submitted by the participants with certification from the LGU representative and OPA Fisheries Section staff. 

The entry with the highest ABW will be declared the winner. 

Fish entries must be submitted for weighing also on April 3, 2011 at the OPA Vermiculture and Mushroom Laboratory in Panaad, Genzola said.   

The ‘Pinaka’ contest is one of the 17 contests and awards lined up for the event titled “Pasidungog sa Mangunguma kag Mangingisda sa Panaad.” 

The event that falls on the last day of this year’s Panaad sa Negros Festival will bring to the fore the valuable contributions of farmers and fisherfolk in providing food for the table, the press release said. 

These ‘unsung heroes of the land and sea’ are the key players in the Negros First Food Security Agendum of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., it added.
