University of Negros Occidenta-Recoletos golden boy Skejie Martir registered a record-breaking performance yesterday in elementary boys’ long jump in the 2011 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Iloilo City.

Martir’s 5.34m record gave Negros Occidental a gold medal, boosting the province’s chances of claiming, once again, overall honors in the competition.

Negros blanked Antique, 5-0, in elementary football and blew away Aklan, 13-0, in the secondary department, issuing this early the signal of claiming the gold in ball games.

Iloilo, meanwhile, dominated the literary-musical contest.

The host province was declared champion in both elementary and secondary levels. The province of Capiz ranked second while Guimaras and Negros Occidental tied at the third place in the elementary level.

Negros Occidental was second runner up and Capiz was first runner up in the secondary level.

For the elementary level, the Iloilo delegation won first in English declamation and Folk Dance. Capiz grabbed the championship crown for Filipino declamation and vocal solo-pop. The province of Aklan was able to bring home the crown in vocal solo-classical.

Iloilo also won first place in Filipino declamation and vocal solo-classical. Capiz won in English declamation, vocal solo pop and folk dance. Negros romped away with the crown in impromptu speech.

The contest for the first time was held at the air-conditioned cinema hall of SM City-Iloilo.

The scores at the literary-musical contest though will not affect their standing in sports events, the WVRAA organizer said.*NAB
