Cyclist wins PHL 28th gold in
Indonesia SEA Games

As of 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Team Philippines had 28 gold medals, 52 silvers, and 73 bronzes as Filipino cyclist John Rene Mier won the country’s second cycling gold on the final day of action in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

Mier, 19, topped the 30km point race in a follow up to the triumph of Alfie Catalan in the 4,000m individual pursuit on Sunday.

Earlier, Marianne Mariano bowed to Thi Ly Tan of Vietnam in the 56 kgs. finale of women sanda and settled for silver.

Stuck in sixth place overall in the medal tally, behind leaders Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, the Team Philippines managed to secure more medals yesterday as results from traditional boat racing and wushu were submitted.

The Philippine traditional boat racing team captured another silver medal while cyclist Apryl Eppinger collected her third individual medal — a bronze — in the final day of competitions.

The Filipino paddlers finished behind Mynmar and ahead of host Indonesia in the gruelling 2,000m, 20-man crew race that capped the event where RP had gained one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The Fil-Aussie Eppinger, whose mother is from the Ilocos province, took her closing day bronze in the 5-kilometer scratch race winding up behind Muziza Uyun of Indonesia and Maneetan Jutatip of Thailand.

Earlier, Eppinger grabbed two silver medals in the sprint races.

Meanwhile,in Jakarta, thee Philippine dulian team of John Keithley Chan, Eleazar Jacob and Engelbert Addogan took their fight routine to a silver medal finish in the final day of wushu events.

Their female counterparts -- Karissa Chan, KC Sacalburo and Natasha Lacsamana -— settled for bronze. *PNA
