As the nation today marks the second anniversary of theMaguindanao massacre where 58 people, including 32 members of the media, were killed, the sister of one of the fatalities who was from Negros Occidental is appealing for help for his children.
Among those massacred were broadcast journalists Bart Maravilla of Bombo Radyoand HenryAraneta, a correspondent of dzRH,who were fromNegros Occidental.
Rowena Paraan, secretary general of the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines, said members of the fourth estate will visit the massacre site in Sitio Masalay, Barangay Salman, Ampatuan, Maguindanao this morning to light candles and offer prayers for their fallen comrades.
In Bacolod the NUJP-Negros Occidental andthe Communications Department and the Inter-Disciplinary Studies of the University of St. La Salle will hold a photo exhibit to commemorate themassacre atthe USLS lobby 4:30 p.m. Thursday, NUJP Neg. Occ. interim chair Julius Mariveles said.
Meanwhile, Teresita Maravilla, a sister of Bart Maravilla, said the last year has been difficult for her family.
Maravilla, who lives in Barangay 6, Bacolod,said four of her brother’s children – Colleen, 16, Jashen, 15, Josh, 11, and Jinx Cyrus, 7, are now in her care.
She said she makes a living buying and selling scrap iron, and it has been difficult to make ends meet.She wishes they could get some kind of assistance.
She said Bart’s youngest child John Clarence, 5,is now living with her other brother in Cadiz City.*CPG
