| ‘Hot cars’ recovered
this year, HPG claims
Several suspected “hot cars” were recovered by the National Highway Patrol Group in different areas in Negros Occidental, in their operations this year, HPG-Negros chief, Insp. Larry Tan, said yesterday.
Tan said the vehicles were reportedly stolen in Metro Manila and parts of Mindanao, and transported to Negros Occidental.
He said the cars will temporarily be in the custody of the HPG while the owners are being located.
Tan, however, refused to give details as to how these vehicles were recovered and from whom they were seized while the investigation is still ongoing.
Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina, director of the national Highway Patrol Group, said their records show that carnapping incidents in the country dropped by 56 percent from January to March this year, compared to the same period last year.
He said the decrease of carnapping incidents in the Philippines can be attributed to the relentless campaign of the HPG that resulted in the neutralization of 27 carnapping and hijacking groups.
HPG, Espina said, is not only focused on preventing carnapping incidents, but is also exerting effort to recover vehicles stolen earlier.*APN back

2 face raps for
resisting arrest
A teenager and his companion are facing a string of charges after they fought back against the policemen apprehending them in Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod City, Monday.
Police identified them as John Razel, 22, and Raymar, 18, both surnamed Awit and residents of Purok Nami-Nami, Brgy. Sum-ag.
Senior Police Officer 4 Arnold Vasquez reported that he and his companions were conducting police visibility patrol at the Araneta highway at about 5 a.m. when they saw the Awits.
Vasquez said they told the two to go home because they were observed to be under the influence of liquor and were being unruly in the streets.
Instead of following their order, the two resisted, fought back and bad-mouthed them, he said.
The policemen arrested the Awits, who are now detained at the lock-up cell of Station 9, the police said.
Vasquez and his companions are readying charges for alarm and scandal, resisting arrest and grave oral defamation against the Awits.*APN back
