La Carlota City 40-Up cagers and their counterparts from Sum-ag Athletic Club will test each other’s strength when they collide in the first game of the Rep. Antony Golez-Senator Koko Pimentel Basketball Cup tomorrow, 8 a.m. at the Regent Pearl Covered Court, Barangay Alijis, Bacolod City.

The game between La Carlota and Sum-ag will follow after the tournament’s opening ceremony with Golez and Jewel Lobaton – Pimentel, wife of Sen. Pimentel, as guests, a press release from organizers said.

In the second game, Hinigaran and Ramos Group will square it off in the 50-above division.

Other teams in the 40-Up are Hinigaran, Basketball Unified Sports Group (BUSG), Handumanan, Panaad, City Engineers Office, NEPRO-AC and Panaad AC, BUS Group, Handumanan, NEPRO-AC and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas, the press release said.

The tournament adopts the format of a single round robin elimination with the top four teams moving to the semifinal.  Number 1 and 2 teams will have a twice-to-beat advantage with the winners disputing the title, while the losers play for third place.

Tournament commissioner Nene Lapore and Alijis barangay captain Donie dela Vega said the tournament will give professionals born not later than 1971 for the 40-Up division and 1961 for the 50-Up catetgory, a chance to compete in friendly matches, fostering camaraderie and fellowship.

The sponsors and the organizers expect a good turnout as KBP president Buddy Ferrer will head his fellow broadcasters and other print media practitioners trade shots with local basketball clubs and enthusiasts as far as Hinigaran and La Carlota, the press release said.*
