New crisis center mulled
BY MARICAR ARANAS & JUDY F. PARTLOW

Members of the Provincial Council on Women of Negros Oriental hope to build a new structure to house the Women and Children Crisis Center and serve as temporary shelter for women and children who are victims of abuse.

Assistant Provincial Administrator Josefina Columna, said the provincial government has no available shelter for victims of abuses. The existing crisis center located at the Philippine National Police provincial headquarters compound is already dilapidated because of lack of maintenance, she added.

Columna suggested the rehabilitation and repair of the building but said there is need to improve the facilities like communication and other amenities. It should also be fenced to prevent unnecessary activities with members of the PNP.

The building is now under the management of the PNP Provincial Office, but with the changing of leadership of the provincial police director, the facility was no longer maintained properly.

SPO3 Edilberto Euraoba III of the Provincial Community Relations of the PNP Provincial Office admitted that the building is already dilapidated and should be properly rehabilitated to become a suitable and comfortable shelter for victims.

He also said the Provincial Council on Women have guidelines and assign personnel to man the center 24/7 to ensure its proper maintenance.

Meanwhile, Alberta Abrio, Provincial Assistant Social Welfare Officer, said the present area is not suitable for a crisis center and does not comply with the standard requirements of the Department of Social Welfare and Development for a crisis center.* JFP/MA
