2 firearms seized

Soldiers of the 11th Infantry Battalion figured in another encounter Monday with suspected New People’s Army rebels, tagged as the suspects in the burning of a sugarcane farm and cargo truck in Sitio Tara, Brgy. Carabalan, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Lt. Col. Ramil Bitong, 11th IB commander, said the gunbattle lasted for about two minutes, and the rebels withdrew, leaving a .45 caliber pistol and a homemade shotgun at the encounter site.

Bitong said they received reports that the rebels encountered by a team of soldiers led by Cpl. Edval Pendon are behind the burning of a 10-wheeler truck and several hectares of sugarcane field owned by Gerardo Titular in Brgy. Carabalan, Himamaylan City, three weeks ago.

Before the arson incident, 11th IB soldiers also figured in armed skirmishes with five suspected NPA rebels in Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City, who left behind a homemade shotgun and combat packs containing personal belongings, military records showed.

Bitong said the presence of the rebels was relayed to them by civilians already fed up with the NPA extortion activities.*GPB

13 ‘stolen’ goats recovered

A total of 13 goats believed to be stolen were recovered by members of the Bacolod City Police Special Operations Group at about 5:30 p.m. Monday in Brgy. Taculing.

SOG head Supt, Santiago Rapiz yesterday said the recovery stemmed from information from Senior Police Officer 1 Ezekiel Poblacion of police station 7, who tipped them about a white Dmax van delivering goats to a vacant lot at 4th road in Puentebella Subdivision.

He said 11 of the goats were recovered from the lot while two more were seized from a nearby residence.

Rapiz said they already have the identities of the suspects but did not reveal their identities as a follow-up operation to recover other goats is ongoing.

Investigation showed that the goats stolen were from Brgy. Granada, Bacolod, towns of Murcia and Manapla, Bago and Talisay Cities and that once the suspects had brought the goats to the vacant lot in Puentevella Subdivision, their cohort deliver them to their buyers on a tricycle.

The group’s usual modus is to park their white van near their target goat and one will pretend to be urinating beside the road but will take the goat later, Rapiz said.

As of yesterday, several owners who had lost goats went to BCPO to check on the animals that are now in the police custody. They will release them to their owners after they present proof of ownership, he also said.

Rapiz added that relatives of the suspects are cooperating with them.*APN

Cops arrest jai-alai operators

Two suspected jai-alai operators were arrested by members of Police Regional Office-6 Intelligence Unit in Brgy. 13, Bacolod City at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Leonor Yao, “alias Bebing”, 58, and Morito Anacan, 57, both of Purok Boulevard in Brgy. 13 were arrested in the act of tallying bets for jai-alai, Police Officer 3 Joshua Barile, one of the apprehending officers, said.

Barile said they recovered several tally sheets of jai-alai, bundles of tipsters with the codename “Meredien Vista Gaming Corporation”, betting stubs, ball pens, calculator and P740 in bet money.

The two are now detained at Police Station 1 lock-up cell and will face charges for illegal gambling.

Police Regional Office-6 Director, Chief Supt. Cepriano Querol, said Friday he hopes to put an end to illegal gambling in the region, particularly in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, next year and has ordered an all-out-war against it.

Querol also urged the public to cooperate and make the campaign against illegal gambling, particularly jai-alai, successful.*APN
