Shuttlers from Jaguar Badminton Academy continue their reign in local badminton scene as they captured most of the gold and silver medals offered during the Congressman Albee Benitez Badminton Cup 2011 held November 26-27 at the Pohang Badminton Court in Bacolod City.

Jaguars Ernesto Layao and Robert Aloyan booked the gold in Level A Mixed Doubles, with Layao also dominating the Level A singles competition by beating Don Cuyno of University of St. La Salle.

It was a silver finish for Jaguar pair Sarah Sabino and Rogel Managasi in Level B Mixed Doubles as they failed to contain the equally impressive performance from Bhea Isidro and Mike Minuluan in the championship round.

In 15 and Under boys’ doubles, Ismael Reinoso and Louie Medina captured the gold, while Kerr Longno was unbeatable in 13 and Under boys’ singles.

Mark Valenzuela settled for silver in 11 and Under boys’ singles, as Cody Torres of St. Scholastica’s Academy plucked the gold.

The Albee Benitez Badminton Cup is one of the grassroots programs of Cong. Benitez, himself a champion badminton player.

Through the tournament, Benitez hopes to give young badminton enthusiasts in the province the opportunity to experience high-level of competition be exposed to other playing styles.

Events contested during the two-day tournament were singles and doubles for 9 and Under, 13 and Under, and 15 and Under for Levels A and players. Levels C, D+ and D- were added for the senior players’ fun games, tournament organizer Melanie Sabino said.

The competition drew participation from 295 badminton players in the province coming from the NOPSSCEA, St. Scholastica’s Academy, USLS, Cadiz City, cities of Silay, Victorias, Talisay, Bago and Himamaylan, Valladolid, and entries from Ati-Atihan Badminton Club of Aklan.*NAB
