Taking an early lead in the first five rounds, staggering in the middle rounds then staging a comeback in the last two rounds, Negrense Donnie Nietes dethroned Mexican Ramon Garcia by a unanimous decision to become the new WBO light flyweight champion at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum, Saturday night.

The victory also made Nietes a two-division world boxing champion after holding the WBO minimum weight championship belt for more than three years until he decided to move up in weight early this year.

He joined the elite list of boxers in the world who managed to rule at least two different weight divisions.

Couple held up,
stabbed leaving mall, hubby dies

A Moises Padilla resident was killed and his wife was injured by a hold-upper as they were leaving the Gaisano City Supermall in Bacolod City at about 6:45 p.m. last night, the police said.

Napoleon Alvarado Perez Sr., 56, of Barangay Crossing Magallon in Moises Padilla, who was stabbed in the chest, was declared dead at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, PO2 Janio Oliver Manaay, said in his investigation report.

Madeline Perez, 53, sustained a stab wound on the left arm and was undergoing treatment at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center last night.moremoremore

Brgy head injured
in shooting

A barangay captain in Bacolod City was shot and injured by a teenager at an internet café in Brgy. Tangub at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday in what the police believed to be triggered by revenge.

The victim was identified by Station 8 commander Chief Insp. Danilo Francisco yesterday as Brgy. 22 Captain Charlie Chavez, 25.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 3 Narciso Orbegoso showed that Chavez was using a computer at the Csangtora Internet Café in Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod after visiting a friend in the area, when the suspect identified as Noe Anima shot him from the back.moremoremore
