ROXAS CITY - The West Negros University Mustangs and the University of St. La Salle Stingers drew a large crowd of screaming supporters when they played and beat their opponents in separate games yesterday at Dadivas Gym in Panit-an town, Capiz.

The Mustangs, who captured their 13th straight NOPSSCEA crown last week, demolished Iloilo team John B. Lacson Foundation Memorial University, 83-52, while the Stingers routed home team Filamer Christian University, 103-73.

Michael Macon’s flashy moves inside the court earned him loud cheers from the Panit-an crowd as the Mustangs took an early lead in the first quarter, 19-13.

As the NOPSSCEA champions piled up more points to bury JBLFMU, the cheers of support grew louder as the spectators expressed their appreciation for the quality basketball game they are getting.

If the Mustangs earned the respect of the Panit-an crowd, the USLS players were instant celebrities as screaming high school girls sought their autographs after the blow out win against JBLFMU.

Rookie Allen Dionela, who scored four points, was mobbed after the game by a group of teenagers who wanted to have their pictures taken with him. Dionela had more “fans” than team captain Rodgie Gelasan, who led the team with 34 points, a La Sallian, who watched the game said.

Even the vendors outside the gym, took time to shake the hands of the Stingers as they headed for their waiting service vehicle, he added.

In contrast to the jovial mood of the men’s basketball team, apprehension pervades inside the quarters of the USLS women’s football squad as member Alyana Maquirang was rushed to St. Anthony’s Hospital here after getting injured in the game against Ateneo de Manila University. USLS bowed to Ateneo, 8-0.

In men’s football, the game between De La Salle University and UNO-Recoletos ended in a sour note as DLSU walked out of the field in the second half. Game officials awarded the win to the Recoletos team as they were leading 1-0 when the DLSU withdrew.*NAB
