Asuela vs. Montoyo in
3rd GAEV Chess final

After battling equally tough rivals in six rounds, Ellan Asuela and Club Master Ted Ian Montoyo faced each other last night to dispute the title in the

Final round of the 2011 3rd George Aguirre/Eugenio Villanueva Memorial Negros Open Individual Chess Tournament at the Captel Hotel in Bacolod City.

Asuela drew with NM Nelson Villanueva after 27 moves of Reti to earn a half point for a total of 5.5 points after six rounds, while Montoyo beat Eric Abanco in 64 moves of Benoni to get the full 5 points to advance into the final round.

Defending champion Sander Severino got the full 5 points after his win against Ric Raymund Peña in 52 moves of Benoni and was playing against Herbert Ciocon Jr. last night in Board 2.

Ciocon won by default against CM Glen Francis Panes after the latter filed a protest, contesting his loss to Asuela in 5th round.

Villanueva, on the other hand, has Danny Maersk Mangao as his final opponent in Board 3, while Aguedo Docaseand Warlito Dymosco square it off in Board 4.

NM Alfred Acaling III, who beat Rey Flores in 61 moves of Caro Kann in 6th round, plays  in Board 5 with Gary Baltar , who won over NM Alan Severino in 53 moves of English in 6th round.

NM Edwin Tan and James Carmelo Uy, will play in Board 6; Ric Raymund Peñaand Al Quin Soberanoin Board 7, and Joseph Navarraand Eric Abanco in Board8.

In the female category’ Adelaide Lim and Niña Dohinog, both with 4 points, will vie for the title, while Valerio Mangubat is a cinch to dominate the Kiddies category.*NAB
