Top tanod, brgy named

Barangay Mandalagan won in the Barangay Category while Tanod Willy Idiosolo, also of Mandalagan, won in the Individual Category in the Search for Outstanding Barangay Tanod conducted by the City Search Team and spearheaded by the Department of Interior and Local Government, a City Hall press release said.

The Search was conducted August 2 to 3 this year.

The scoring was based on basic knowledge and experiences in firefighting, first aid, arrest techniques, group formation routines, tanod gears, uniforms, proof of trainings and accomplishments.

Meanwhile, Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia urged barangay captains to activate their Barangay Disaster Coordinating Councils, during a recent City Development Council meeting, at the MassKara Hall of the Government Center.

Leonardia said barangays should have their DCCs to prepare for eventualities, especially floods. He cited countries like Mexico, Indonesia, England, Korea and even the USA that were overwhelmed by floods despite their modern drainage systems.

The mayor said climate change has altered many things. So that when it rains these days, it is often heavier than it used to be before. “Let’s face reality, if we are ever faced with heavy rains like what happened in other places, it could be beyond the capacity of our drainage system.  What happened to other countries can also happen to us.  We cannot pray for less rain – we should not ask for a lighter load but a stronger back,” he stressed, adding “Disasters like that could hit us.”

Leonardia said that barangays can undergo trainings with the help of experts in disaster preparedness and utilize the Disaster Academy located in Pana-ad.  He also reminded them that “An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.”

“We cannot foretell what will happen and when it will happen.  If ever disasters occur and our DCCs are prepared, we can prevent or minimize damages.  So please be serious in activating your coordinating councils”, Leonardia said.*
