Sta. Rosa sounded an early warning to its rivals by beating Talotog, 83-70, in the curtain-raiser of the 2011 Mayor Andrew Montelibano Cup, where 23 barangay teams are eyeing the title at the Murcia Sports and Cultural Center.
Competing in Bracket A, the Sta. Rosa quintet of Brgy. Captain Benjamin Parreño, were led by Jingo Suspene and Raymond de la Cruz, who delivered 17 and 13 points, respectively, to outscore their rivals.
Sta. Rosa dominated the game with a 40-29 advantage at halftime.
Steering the Talotog squad of Brgy. Captain Ramero Arimas, were Gerry de la Cruz and Reneboy Javier, who scored 25 and 24 points.
In yesterday’s game, Team Lopez Jaena of Brgy. Captain Hernan Alintana, dealt Talotog another setback, 74-66.
The boys from San Miguel of Brgy. Captain Dante Lastre, meanwhile, turned back Pandanon of Brgy. Captain Edna Saldo in a 70-65 win, with Rufo Dionisio leading the surge with 24 baskets and Junel Fegidero adding 20 points to seal the victory.
Iglaua-an of Brgy. Captain Nicolas Togle gave Pandanon its second defeat in the tournament with a 69-59 thrashing in yesterday’s schedule.
Minoyan of Brgy. Captain James Bernalde overpowered Canlandog of Brgy. Captain Meldy Dela Peña, 96-83, in the Bracket C match-up, as Salvacion of Brgy. Captain Clemente Dela Peña beat Caliban of Brgy. Captain Anton Gonzaga, 76-64, in the Bracket D.
The caging event also coincides with the men and women’s volleyball competitions, where 20 teams are seeing action, and the men’s softball with a 10-team field.
Playing as of press time in basketball, were Minoyan against Zone II in Bracket C ; defending titlist Blumentritt versus Alegria in Bracket D, and Zone VI against Zone III in Bracket A.*
