Residents from 19 mountainous sitios of the hinterland barangays of Binalbagan expressed their vehement opposition to the ongoing mining explorations in their areas, with the support of their Sangguniang Bayan chaired by Vice Mayor Emmanuel Aranda.

A petition, signed by 156 family-settlers of Brgys. Bia-o, Santol and Amontay, a copy of which was endorsed by the municipal council to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental, with its resolution expressing its support, said the mining activities may adversely affect farming activities and other source livelihood of residents.

The settlers said the activities of the Negros Oriental Mining Corporation may also result in soil erosion, siltation and turbidity current.

The Binalbagan SB said it supported the petition, and endorsed it to the provincial council of Negros Occidental for appropriate action.

Board Member Emilio Yulo III, chairperson of the SP committee on Environment and Natural Resources, has proposed a resolution requiring the mandatory consultation by national agencies, bureaus and offices, or government-owned and controlled corporations with residents in the planning and implementation of projects or programs with ecological and social impacts within Negros Occidental.*GPB
