DyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod news chief Julius Mariveles placed third in the amateur-advance hobbyist category of the “Oro, Plata at Mata” national photo contest, a press release from Aksyon Radyo said.

The Peace and Conflict Journalism Network Philippines and the Philippine-Misereror Partnership, Incorporated sponsored the contest that focused on the effects of mining on the environment and communities.

At least 144 entries were submitted by photographers from across the country in the community, amateur and professional categories and 22 finalists were picked with only nine winners chosen.

Mariveles’ entry, originally titled “His Creation, Mine’s Creation”, is an image shot at the Cansibit Pit of the Maricalum Mining Corporation in Sipalay city, Negros Occidental.

It shows a mother and daughter beside what appears to be the side of a lake but is actually the vast pit where Maricalum Mining used to extract copper deposits. Since the mine closed more than a decade ago, it is filled with millions of gallons of water that is also feared to have turned toxic, the press release said.

Judging the entries were Reuters Philippines chief photographer Erik De Castro, Philippine Daily Inquirer chief photographer Ernie Sarmiento and a representative from Misereor.

Pecojon is a network of journalists while Misereor is a partnership between and among civil society organizations, non-government organizations and people’s organizations in the Philippines, the press release added.*
