Bantay Bayan member slain
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A member of the Bantay Bayan anti-crime group was gunned down Thursday by a still unidentified gunman in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The victim, identified as Francisco Sibug, who had also served as a driver of a politician in Kabankalan City, was shot in the back, while he was eating at a “karinderia” at the Perez highway in Kabankalan City, initial police investigations showed.

Sibug succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Before his death, Sibug was instrumental in the arrest of a notorious theft suspect, and this is being looked into by police probers as a possible motive for the killing.

Twelve empty shells of a 9mm pistol were recovered by the police at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, two suspects in the theft of a motorcycle were arrested Wednesday by the police at a Teachers Village in Brgy. 2, San Carlos City.

Supt. Harold Tuzon, San Carlos police chief, said the two suspects, identified as Ryan Benting and Abelino Aguanta, were arrested after they stole a Honda 125 XRM motorcycle.

Tuzon said they are also verifying reports that the two suspects may also be involved in theft of motorcycles in neighboring towns of San Carlos City.

On Sept. 12, a certain Rolando Deguerra Jr. was also apprehended at Central Lopez in Brgy. Paraiso, Sagay City, by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Judge Renato Munez, for the crime of frustrated homicide.

Chief Insp. Gabriel Gutierrez, Sagay police officer-in-charge, said Munez recommended P24,000 as bail for Deguerra, who is now in jail.*GPB
