Senior Supt. Edward Carranza assumed office as provincial director of the Philippine National Police in Negros Oriental at turnover rites yesterday at Camp Fernandez, Agan-an, Sibulan.

Carranza assured Negrenses that he will do his best to meet the expectations of the people.

He, however, did not mention what he plans to do with the proliferation of illegal drugs and illegal gambling in Negros Oriental. During an interview later, Carranza said these are included in the marching orders to him of the chief PNP.

He, however, could not give any time fame on when the illegal numbers game called swertres could be eradicated, but promised to sustain the operation against all forms of criminality.

Gov. Roel Degamo said he still has full trust and confidence in the leadership of outgoing director, Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, for having performed an excellent job for the province.

Degamo directed Carranza to ensure that those who wish to disturb the peace and tranquility in the province will be dealt with in accordance with existing laws.

Degamo assured that his administration will provide the same support and cooperation that was accorded to the outgoing provincial commander.*JG

Meanwhile, Carranza promised to continue the projects and personnel development trainings at the Negros Oriental PNP Provincial Command initiated by his predecessor.

Carranza said that among his priorities will be the enhancement of the police operational procedures in order to prevent human rights violations.

He will also implement the order to assign at least one police officer in every barangay in the province. He believes that police visibility in the barangays will help deter the occurrence of crimes, he said.

Carranza said he is also encouraging the support if the community to help achieve lasting peace and order in Negros Oriental.

Another priority is to help retired police officers and those who will soon retire.

He also said he hopes that the business community and the non-government organizations will continue to support the PNP in Negros Oriental under his leadership.*MA
