Cagers donning the Sta. Rosa, Iglau-an, Minoyan and Alegria colors paced their respective brackets in the 2011 Mayor Andrew L. Montelibano Cup at the Murcia Sports and Cultural Center.

Going into its third week, the 23-team field witnessed an unprecedented upset with defending champion Blumentritt yet to win an assignment following a Round 1 loss to Alegria, the current Bracket D leader, which booked triumphs against Blumentritt, 78-72, and Caliban, 80-65.

The boys of coach Matthew Tormo relied on double digit hit-makers Roderick Bandiola, 12, and Renante Tormo and Erwin Arimas with 10 points each, in their match against the hapless Caliban side.

Unbeaten Sta. Rosa, meanwhile, leads Bracket A with two wins followed by Lopez Jaena and Zone IV with identical twin victories; Zone III with a single loss; Buenavista two losses, and Talotog three setbacks.

Sta. Rosa Barangay Captain Benjamin Parreno’s wards registered a 66-61 victory over Buenavista last weekend in Bracket A with big help from Raymund de la Cruz, who made 22 points; Robert Alati-it 14 points, and Raymund Herdon 11 points.

Buenavista’s losing campaign had Edmar Mino, Hermogenes Margin and Junrie Aghun as topscorers with 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Lopez Jaena beat Buenavista, 86-62, in the other Bracket A schedule, as Zone IV crushed Talotog, 68-56.

Bracket B is led by Iglau-an with a 2-0 win-loss record followed by Zone V, 1-0; San Miguel, 1-1; Sta. Cruz, 0-1, and Pandanon 0-2.

Iglau-an, aided by Renel Tubongbanua with 24 points and Herminio Graellos, with 18, recently routed San Miguel, 82-51. In the other Bracket B match, Zone V defeated Sta. Cruz, 73-61.

Minoyan, donning a 2-1 win-loss slate, is the Bracket C solo leader, followed by Cansilayan (1-0), Abu-Abo (1-0),  Zone II (1-1), Canlandog (0-1) and Amayco (0-2).

Abu-Abo entered the win column after overpowering Amayco, 80-46, while Cansilayan defeated Zone II, 79-73.*
