Why that was
Shamcey’s answer

Ninfa Leonardia

The lady’s got a job now. It didn’t take four days after she came home with the Miss Universe third runner-up title tucked under her arm before Miss Shamcey Supsup was offered a job by no less than the mayor of her hometown, former Congresswoman Darlene Antonio Custodio. Remember Darlene? She was the little woman who knocked Manny Pacquiao out when they ran for the same position – that of congress representative of GenSan.

Reports yesterday said Custodio has asked Shamcey to design the General Santos Business Center, and she accepted. And it was no whimsical, “politically motivated” plan on the mayor’s side, because we all know that Shamcey is a bona fide architect, having passed the licensure examination, well, nor only passed, but actually topped it, recently. I bet the business center will become a tourist attraction for General Santos City, and also that it will bear a plaque prominently announcing that it was a Miss Universe-Philippines and third runner-up worldwide, who designed it.

Now, it is really true that a city built on the top of a hill cannot be bid. No matter how much Shamcey had tried to conceal the fact that she already has a boyfriend, the truth leaked out even before she came back from Brazil. Then she also tried to keep mum on his identity but some resourceful columnists soon traced him and even interviewed him. To those who haven’t heard yet, the guy’s name is Lloyd Lee, a very well-to-do businessman, five years older than her, and also very good-looking. In fact, it was found out that he has modeled for some products himself.

The published interviews also revealed, rather explained, why Shamcey was so quick with her response to the question and answer portion of the Miss U contest. Also ferreted out by journalists was the fact that her boyfriend used to be a Catholic, but become a born-again Christian because that is what her faith is. So it was a case of him really “loving her God”, too. What greater love could Lloyd Lee show than changing his own beliefs to hers? So now we know.

There is something frightening about the youth of today. So many times lately we hear about youngsters, not only involved in criminal activities, but also taking their own lives for the most incomprehensible reasons. A tiff with a boy/girlfriend, a scolding from concerned parents, low grades in school, or even being bullied, and before the poor families know it, the young member had already hanged, shot, or poisoned himself or herself.

But one of the worst cases was what happened at the SM Mall in Pampanga the other day when a 13-year-old boy shot and killed his 16-year-old friend because of jealousy. The “friend” was another boy, like him, and there seemed to be no doubt that he did it, because he left a suicide note giving his reasons for his act. After shooting his beloved, he turned the gun on himself but, unfortunately, neither of them died instantly. Both were declared brain dead, though, at the hospital where they were taken. Yesterday it was reported that the 13-year-old shooter had already died. As for his victim, his family has taken him out of the hospital and brought him home, probably afraid of what prolonged confinement would cost them.

The incident, as well as the other one, also in an SM Mall in Manila where a depressed wife also shot and killed her estranged husband, and accidentally also killed a security guard who tried to stop her from shooting herself, has caused fear about the security provided by such establishments. How, with all those alleged “inspections” were those people able to bring in their weapons? I am sure, though, that most of us have noted how perfunctorily mall guards do this checking. Now, prepare for exhaustive examination of your handbags when you go shopping. Just hope they don’t go as far as groping.

It was exciting to watch the Philippines-Syria encounter in the FIBA-Asia basketball game yesterday. Up to the third quarter, our boys lagged scarily behind and only seemed to get their bearings on the fourth. And then, wow! They froze the fearsome-looking Syrians at only 45 points for almost 10 minutes as they kept on piling up points until the game ended with a score of 75-52 in their favor! And I read in the Sports news that they also beat Japan 83-76 the day before. Could the Olympics be beckoning at last? Cross your fingers.*
