Phl five battles Qatar tonight
in Women’s Invitational Cup

The Philippine women’s basketball team’s strength will be tested today as the squad faces Qatar national team in the 5:30 p.m. game of the 1st PSC-SBP Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament at the West Negros University Gym.

Led by six-foot Cassy Tioseco, the Haydee Ong-mentored Filipinas will be up against the team that won the GCC Women’s Basketball Championship in Doha against Bahrain, April this year.

The match is expected to be a tough one for the Discovery Pelas Pilipinas squad as the Qataris will have in their lineup the high-scoring Warda Mourgam, who led her team against Bahrain in the final game of the GCC Championship.

Sagay hosts 2ND District slugfest

The 2nd District Inter-LGU Amateur Boxing Tournament that aims to tap more boxing talents from the grassroots opened Friday in Sagay City.

The tournament will serve as the qualifying round for boxers from Manapla, Cadiz, and host Sagay, who will represent the second District in the 2nd Governor’s Cup Boxing Championship set next month.

Earlier, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. had said that boxing remains the centerpiece sports program of the provincial government. He said that the champions in the Governor’s Cup will form the Negros team that will slug it out against pugs from General Santos City, who are scheduled to visit the province with boxing icon Manny Pacquiao this December.

Countdown to Nietes’ fight begins

With 10 more remaining days before he faces current Mexican WBO lightflyweight champion Ramon “Principe” Garcia, Negrense world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes is deep into training, determined to be in his most deadly form come October 8 at the St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.

Nietes, along with other local pugs, held a public sparring at the SM City-Bacolod, Saturday to give the Bacoleños a glimpse of what they will witness on October 8 -- skills, strength and speed inside the boxing ring.

Those who watched the public sparring were able to get complimentary tickets for the fight night and had photo opportunities with their favorite fighters.
