Free diabetes check held

Several Bacoleños yesterday availed of free diabetes check at the Bacolod Government Center through the Bacolod Initiative Nurturing Good Health medical mission of the city government, a press release from the city said.

One hundred strips were prepared for the free fasting blood sugar test for potential and borderline patients that started at 7 a.m. The activity was spearheaded by Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson in cooperation with KALBE International and PMII.

Tina Dacia of PMII said diabetes is a lifetime ailment, either hereditary or developed, because of a wrong lifestyle but can best be managed with exercise, right diet or a change of lifestyle, the press release also said.

The diabetes testing was supplemented by cholesterol and blood pressure readings and other medical checks by personnel from the City Health Office, led by Dr. Babylin Drilon.

A urinalysis physical exam was also recently conducted at the NGC lobby, the press release added.*

Sorolla assumes presidency
of Carlos Hilado State College

The Carlos Hilado Memorial State College community welcomed yesterday its sixth president in a two-hour turnover rite at the school’s main campus in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

Dr. Renato Sorolla formally assumed CHMSC’s leadership after acting president Dr. Benny Palma, turned over to him the college’s mace, medal, and banner, witnessed by the school’s faculty, staff, and students.

Sorolla, who described himself as a teacher and a researcher in his acceptance speech, is the former dean of the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology’s College of Industrial Technology in Iloilo City.

He said he did not come to CHMSC as a “one-man army” as he emphasized the need for the institution’s members to help him in achieving its goals.

In addition to CHMSC’s thrusts, Sorolla said he envisions the college’s stakeholders, particularly its students, to become “socially mature” by excelling not only in academics but also in working for the good of the environment and for human development, especially poverty alleviation.

Psychology instructor Gerry Galarpe said he hopes Sorolla’s experiences and expertise from WVCST will help further improve CHMSC, especially in seeing it become a university.

Education major Gyler Ann Granja, meanwhile, said she hopes further improvements will be for faculty members that will extend to instructional matters.

Palma thanked the CHMSC members for their support as he recounted milestones during his service to the school, that included the drafting of a five-year development plan, and the construction of new buildings.*PP

Two-day tourist
cop training on

The Negros Occidental Tourism Center and the Association of Tourism Officers of Negros Occidental will be conducting a tourist police training today and tomorrow at the Governor’s Hall, Capitol Building in Bacolod City.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will give the welcome remarks while Helen Catalbas, officer in charge of the Department of Tourism Region VI, will provide the overview of the training to some 150 participants, a government press release said.

Severino Pacete, tourism officer of Silay City, will give a lecture and practical exercises on the “Role and Mission of the Tourist Police” based on the Silay experience blueprint.

Cristine Mansinares, tourism officer of Negros Occidental, said the training is designed due to the growing number of visitors to the province and the need to ensure their safety as they travel in tourist attractions.

Other topics to be discussed are the Philippine socio-cultural history, security protocol, basic investigation procedure, handling cases related to tourists, and principles of tourist safety, the press release said.

Tourism consultant Nancy Pestano will handle group dynamics for values formation while Mansinares will talk on tourism products and services, the press release added.*
