Contingents from the provinces of Aklan and Iloilo arrived yesterday ahead of the other delegates from Panay Island for the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet set on March 12 to 16 at the Panaad Park and Stadium and the Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City.

Department of Education Provincial Sports head Romeo Sison said the Antique delegation will arrive today while those from Guimaras and the remaining athletes and coaches from Iloilo will be checking in tomorrow.

The Aklanons are billeted at Rizal Elementary School, while those from Antique will stay at the Mansilingan Agro-Industrial High School.

Capiz delegates are billeted at ETCS 1, 2 and 3, Guimaras at A.L. Jaime Elementary School; Iloilo at Andres Bonifacio Elementary School 1 and 2, and host Negros at Negros Occidental High School.

Techncal officials who will supervise the games in this year’s edition of the WVRAA will stay at the Bacolod City National High School.

The six provinces in Western Visayas will be competing for the gold, silver, and bronze medals in 17 sports disciplines in elementary and secondary, as well as the top honors in the cultural competition.

Up grabs are medals in archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, sepak takraw, sipa, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball.

Expected to deliver a message to the WVRAA delegates when the meet opens on March 12 is boxing icon and Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao. He will be joined by boxing two-time division champion Donnie Nietes during the opening rites.

Meanwhile, host Negros Occidental will defend the titles it won last year in Iloilo City.

Negrense athletes bagged the gold in secondary boys and girls' badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, girls' chess, softball, boys and girls' swimming, girls' table tennis, girls' tennis, and girls' volleyball.

In elementary competition, Negros won in girls' athletics, boys and girls' badminton, baseball, boxing, softball, boys and girls' swimming, girls' taekwondo, girls' table tennis, boys and girls' tennis and girls' volleyball.

Iloilo reigned in secondary girls and boys’ athletics, boys and girls’ arnis, boys’ chess, football, boy’s table tennis, and boys’ volleyball.

The Ilonggos also ruled the elementary boys and girls’ arnis, boys’ athletics, basketball, boys’ chess, football, sipa, boys’ table tennis, boys’ taekwondo and boys’ volleyball.*NAB
