Class B action heats up in
Fil-Sino basketball tilt

Organic Solutions slipped past Jast Enterprises, 69-68, while JSY Transport squeaked past JSY Countertrade, 84-83, in overtime in Class B of the 2012 Fil-Sino All Asian Countertrade Inc. 1st Conference Inter-Color Basketball Tournament at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.

Siopao Dichavez canned his front end of the free throw to shatter the deadlock with 1.1 seconds remaining for the JSY Transport victory.

Transport took a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter but the quicker Countertrade players led by Jan Jan Guevarra, Berto Uysang and Mark Velez put their fastbreak attacks in high gear to cut the lead to a point, 71-70, with less than a minute left in regulation.

Berto Uysang had a golden opportunity to snatch the victory away from Transport with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, but only made his second free throw to force the extra period.

In the extra time, Guevarra had eight points to put Countertrade on top at 83-81, but Rey Jara of Transport responded with two pressure-packed free throws to force another deadlock.

Transport Tubby Villanueva missed two free throws with 4.3 seconds left, but was bailed out with an offensive rebound by Jara and assisted it to Dichavez who was fouled under the basket.

Villanueva topscored for Transport with 15 points, Dichavez added 13, Jara scored 12 points, Celhelm Uy shot 10, and Garret Tabanao made 8 points.

Guevarra paced Countertrade with 31 points backstopped by Velez with 15 markers, Biboy Uysang delivered 13 points, Ariel Jimenez and Berto Uysang shot 10 points each.

In the other game, it was a down the wire finish as Christopher Mahinay scored with six seconds left for Jast, but Brian Ong’s reverse layup with a second left stole the victory for Organic and allowed the squad to secure the top spot in Class B.

Alex Chua finished with 20 points, 14 of them in the payoff quarter while Brian Ong picked up 12 points, Bingbong Villanueva shot 8, David Tan, Errol Su and Jerky Ong had 6 points each.

Christopher Mahinay led the losing squad with 15 points, Kieron Tan chipped in 14, Jan Jan Young shot 9 points, Ralph Ong contributed 9 points and Kevin Banzon had 8 points.*NAB
