Residents in risk-identified areas in Negros Oriental have been warned against flooding as tropical storm “Nina” had intensified as of the 5 p.m. forecast yesterday by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
A Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council flood advisory said the watercourses in the Tibyawan River in Tayasan town, Pagatban at the boundary of Bayawan and Basay, the Bayawan, Siaton, Canaway, Tanjay, and La Libertad rivers, all of Negros Oriental, will be affected by the storm.
City and town disaster risk reduction and management council chairpersons were requested to undertake precautions and monitor the situation in their areas.
The advisory added that people living in mountain slopes and the low-lying areas near the river systems should be on the alert for flashfloods and landslides.
PAGASA said “Nina” has intensified but is still too far to directly affect any part of the country. Weather forecaster Jori Loiz said “Nina’s” wind strength had increased to 120 kilometers per hour yesterday afternoon from 95 kph Monday, while its gustiness rose to 150 kph from 120 kph.
The eye of the typhoon was located at 1,050 km east of Cagayan (18.4°N, 132.8°E) and forecasted to move west and accelerated at 15 kph from 9 kph, Loiz said.
With its speed, he added that “Nina” is expected to be out of the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday or Sunday towards Japan. Loiz also said it was expected not to make a landfall in any part of the country.
Meanwhile, the Low Pressure Area spotted in northeast of Virac, Catanduanes has dissipated. Loiz said the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone was expected to bring light to moderate rains in Mindanao. An ITCZ is a merge of winds from different directions, which is also a breeding ground for a low pressure area.
PAGASA said moderate to strong winds blowing from the north to northwest will prevail over Luzon and coming from the northwest to west over eastern Visayas and eastern Mindanao. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.*PNA
