Guv calls for Guara relief,
Roxas looking into killings
BY CARLA GOMEZ & LISA GAPAC

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he wants Senior Supt. Celestino Guara, Negros Occidental police director, relieved as soon as possible, after the killing of two more persons in Escalante City Monday.

The governor said he is submitting his request for the relief of Guara to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas.

He is also asking Roxas to act on the findings of Task Force Escalante that had been tasked by President Benigno Aquino in October 2011 to act on calls from non-government organizations, the clergy and relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings in Escalante City, for justice.moremoremore

ALVAREZ SAYS
Comelec control‘ridiculous’
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

“Ridiculous.”

That was the reaction of Vice Gov. Genaro Alvarez Jr. yesterday to suggestions of placing the entire Negros Occidental under Commission on Elections control because of the recent killings in Escalante.

Alvarez, who is challenging Gov. Alfredo Marañon for the top post of the province, said, “Maybe one town, but not the entire province. It’s a ridiculous idea”.

Marañon yesterday said he is asking that Escalante City be placed under Comelec control, but added that it is not necessary at this time to cover the entire province.moremoremore

Marañon gets honorary doctorate,
says education a priority for growth
BY
LISA GAPAC

SAGAY CITY – “To provide education to every Negrense for them to graduate from high school; be prepared for college and for a career is an essential cornerstone of our reform agenda for education under the Negros First Development Program.”

This was stressed by Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. when he was conferred an honorary doctorate degree in public administration by the Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology yesterday, during its 14th Commencement Exercises.

“If we want to create an economy built to last, we need to invest in our people. We need to provide every Negrense with a complete and competitive education that will enable them to succeed in the global economy based on knowledge and education,” Marañon said.
