Foodman squeaks past JKT
to rule 13th TKP cage tourney

Foodman squeaked past Johann Kendrick Tan 96-95 to capture the Class B title of the 13th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup played last Friday at TTHS Po Hang Gym.

Peter Galon engineered the Foodman comeback and scored the last 9 pts. for Foodman to snatch the championship. The double digit rebounding advantage of Foodman in the 4th quarter was the key to its victory as it gave them more 2nd chance offensive opportunities.

JKT was ahead 80-72 going to the 4th quarter, but Galon and Popoy Chua opened the quarter with an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to a single point.

Yan Yan Dy, RB Chua and Joshua Co gave JKT some breathing room for an 89-85 count, but Galon and Chris Javelosa combined for a 6 straight pts. to put Foodman in the driver's seat.

Rb Chua triple push JKT on top anew 92-91. Galon responded with a triple and a perimeter jumper for a 4 pt. lead.

Joshua Co sunk a trey to cut the deficit to 96-95 with 30 sec. left. After JKT foiled the Foodman offensive, tense moment for Foodman as JKT found Co open at the top of the key ,but his shot bounced off the rim as time expired giving Foodman a sigh of relief.

Arvin Gustilo fired 13 pts. to lead Foodman to a 26-23 opening quarter lead even as Ryan Alegario scored 6 pts. for JKT.

JKT forced a deadlock at the break 51 all as RB Chua sizzled with 18 pts. and Danny Boy Uy added 7 pts. Foodman got contribution from Chris Javelosa 7 pts., Dr. Emil Guanzon and Deonyson Dy making 6 pts. apiece.

Deonyson Dy continue to surprise JKT as he added 5 more pts. to keep Foodman ahead in the 1st half of the 3rd quarter, but the trio of Alegario, Yan Yan Dy and Garret Tabanao combined for 21 pts. to give JKT an 80-72 lead going to the 4th quarter.

Gustilo led Foodman with 20 pts., Peter Galon ladded18 pts., Deonyson Dy sunk 4 triples enroute to finishing with 14 pts., Popoy Chua and Chris Javelosa scored 10 pts. each, Bobby Yap made 3 triples for 9 pts. Dr. Guanzon made 8 pts. and Richard Tan had 5 pts.

Most Valuable Player RB CHUA paced JKT with a gamehigh 29 pts., Dy and Joshua Co shot 14 pts. each, Alegario scored 13 pts., Danny Boy Uy picked up 9 pts., Tabanao with 6 pts., Romar Desusa and Stephen Tan had 5 pts. each.

Andrew Tan , the son of Tan Kek Pin, is the tournament benefactor. Mr. Tan Kek Pin is a basketball patron during the 70s in whose honor the tournament has been held.

Tan has intimated that this will be the last year of the Tan Kek Pin tournament.

“This exciting championship game is a fitting ending to the Tan Kek Pin Basketball tournament. The TKP tournament has become a household name when it comes to Basketball in Bacolod City. “Tan said.
