WV grabs 5 more gold medals,
cagers, spikers post 3rd victory

A 1-2 finish for Jil Iron Tabuena and Kent Dormido in elementary boys' discus throw, Berna Luz Talaron's dominating performance in elementary girls' triple jump, and a golden performance from Jennifer Mañas and Crystal AJ Bartarico in arnis delivered five more gold medals for Region VI in the second day of competition of the 2013 Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City yesterday.

Tabuena hurled the metal disc to a distance of 32.14 meters, while Dormido finished second with his 30.92m mark to ruled the field, while Ricardo Cubol of Calabarzon's 28.11m distance was good for bronze.

In elementary girls' triple jump, Talaron won the gold with her 10.19 leap as Leica Marie Antonio of Cagayan Valley (10.14m) landed at second place, and Missy Hannah Cacho of Ilocos (10.07) at third place.

Mañas, on the other hand, accounted for two gold medals as she topped the elementary girls' arnis single weapon and together with Mary Christelle Rendon, dominated the double identical weapon event.

Bartarico duplicated the feat in secondary girs' arnis single weapon to complete the five-gold medal harvest of Western Visayas in Day 2.

Meanwhile, the secondary boys' basketball team with its core of players from Hwa Siong College of Iloilo, continued their winning streak as the squad registered its third victory at the expense of Cordillera region, 59-49. Included in the lineup is John Paul Calvo, who had a stint at the NBA All-Star Weekend in Texas last February as part of the Sprite Promo team.

The secondary girls' basketball team also iced their second assignment after surviving a thrilling match against Northern Mindanao , 50-48.

Western Visayas volleyball teams remained a close contender for the gold in the secondary boys' volleyball as the squad earned their third victory against Bicol in two straight sets, 25-18 and 25-13. Their teammates in the distaff side have two wins.

In elementary volleyball, the boys' bowed to Central Luzon after three sets, 26-24, 12-25, and 24-26, while the girls avenged their first day loss to National Capital Region by demolishing CARAGA in two straight sets, 25-11 and 25-7.

Region VI is also strengthening its bid for another championship in both elementary and secondary softball with convincing wins yesterday against separate rivals.

The elementary girls' from ETCS turned back Central Luzon, 7-1, while the world-famous Domingo Lacson National High School secondary girls' softball team blanked Region IX, 4-0.

In football, the WVRAA elementary team bowed to ARMM yesterday, 1-5.

SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALISTS

Silver medalists for Region VI after two days of competition include Luz Delfin in shot put secondary girls and Mark Ian Bautista in long jump elementary boys. It was Bautista's second medal in the meet after plucking the gold in triple jump.

Shot put gold medalist Renzy John Gemolaga, also earned his second medal with a record-breaking performance in secondary boys' javelin throw.

However, his 55.1-meter distance was only gold for silver as Central Luzon 's Bryan Jay Pacheco hurled the lightweight spear to a distance of 57.81 meters to eclipse the 51.51m mark of Danilo Abarra of Ilocos in last year's games in Pangasinan.

NCR's Joshua Patalud secured the silver with his 56.75m distance, while Gemolaga salvaged the bronze.

Other medalists from Wetern Visayas yesterday were swimmers Ellene Dewara, Tam Marie Castante, Remselle Limaco and Ma. Rudette Casidsid, who settled for bronze in the 200m medley relay secondary girls, while Kim Karen Ambong bagged the silver medal in elementary girls' 100m backstroke.

In badminton team event, WV bagged the silver medal in secondary girls while elementary girls settled for bronze.*NAB
