Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said in a press release yesterday that Negros Occidental province is now No. 4 in dairy production in the country.
Marañon said the gains in the local dairy industry, particularly in La Carlota City, are among the achievements of his Negros First program and leadership, that has engaged in cattle and livestock dispersal programs.
Through the dairy production, there has been a reduction in malnutrition, of grade school pupils who were given milk in feeding programs showing weight increases a week or two. The milk came from the local dairy industry, Marañon said.
Marañon also said that the provincial government’s livestock development program includes genetic improvement through insemination, adding that he has been negotiating with the U.S.Department of Agriculture for local animal producers to be able to avail of better quality of breeds for domestic consumption.
He also said that in April alone, the provincial government distributed 30 carabaos in Moises Padilla and expressed hope that the Philippine Carabao Center in Nueva Ecija will soon provide the provincial government with semen of hybrid carabaos for local artificial insemination.
The development of the livestock and dairy industry, Marañon said, is
a vital part of the Negros First program, which is geared to counter poverty.*
