Ninety-two more housing units will be turned over today by the church and the Dumaguete City government to families dislocated by flooding during tropical storm “Sendong” on Dec. 17, 2011.
The units are built on a one-hectare lot in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete, and make up the second phase of the Caritas Village Temporary Shelter project launched in May 2012.
This brings to 150 the houses constructed for Sendong victims in the first joint project of the Catholic Church and the Dumaguete City government.
Fr. Burton Villarmente, director of the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Dumaguete, said 15 more units have been approved for funding by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action and Caritas, but the start of construction is not known yet.
The first phase of the project, also in Bajumpandan and consisted of 58 units on a 5,000 square meter lot. It was completed and turned over on Dec. 17, 2012, the first anniversary of “Sendong”.*JFP
