Several relief operations were held by the Lions Clubs International District 301-B1 to help victims of super-typhoon “Yolanda (international codename: Haiyan)” in 32 hardest hit areas in Negros Occidental, Capiz and Iloilo provinces recently, its press release said.
The Lions motored to Sagay City, Negros Occidental, and gave more than 500 families a bucket of rice, canned food and instant noodles each; and distributed over 650 food buckets in barangays Singcang, Alijis, Taculing, Mansilingan, Pahanocoy, in Bacolod City, the press release said.
Around 1,000 families in five barangays in Roxas City were given food buckets, and also residents of barangays Barasan, Nanga, Bongco and Dongsol in Pototan town, and Barotac Viejo, Batad, Lemery, Dingle, Passi and Estancia, all in Iloilo, and in Antique, the press release also said.
The Occidental Negros Host Lions Club turned over construction materials, worth about P8,000, to each affected family in Cadiz City. Around 6,740 families have received relief assistance from the Lions clubs, with grant funds from Lions Clubs International Foundation, that committed an initial $130,000 major catastrophe grant, hours after the typhoon to address the immediate needs of the affected communities in Tacloban, Cebu, Capiz, Aklan and Iloilo. An additional $370,000 is also earmarked for long-term assistance and reconstruction, the press release also said.
The Lions Haiyan Relief Committee is also preparing for rehabilitation efforts for communities most severely affected in Leyte, Cebu, Capiz and Iloilo. The committee project chairman is Em Ang, Lions Multiple District chairperson, with past international director Michael So as grant administrator, and Valentine Tio, Johnny Co, Edilberto Aquino, Benilda Cuerpo, Ruth Chua, Araceli Regalado, Manny Manahan and Fr. Eduardo Ventic as members, the press release further said.*

1,200 scholarship
grants available
More than 1,200 scholarship grants were received by the Alay-Lakad Committee that led the walk-for-a-cause for the education and livelihood of out-of-school youth in Bacolod City Sunday, a press release from organizers said.
Among those who gave scholarship slots were the Star of Asia Human Resource Training and Development Inc., University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, VMA Global College, Asia Business Institute of e-Technology and the Megumi Information Technology Center.
High school graduates, who are 18 years old and above, are encouraged to apply for slots at the Department of Social Services and Development office at the Bacolod Government Center. The initial screening of scholarship applications will be led by Committee chairman Harish Nandwani, president of the Rotary Club of Bacolod North, this week, DSSD head Linda Ablanque said in the press release.
Around 18,000 participated in the annual walk Sunday, up from last year’s 10,000, and is the biggest, so far, since the activity was launched five years ago.
Mayor Monico Puentevella and Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya pledged to give P500,000 in cash assistance to the Alay Lakad Foundation, in behalf of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod and City Hall employees, and the amount will be approved by the SP this week, the press release said.
Meanwhile, Alberta Lumogdang, 87, of Barangay Singcang Airport, and Denise Marie Dungog, 1 year and 7 months, were awarded special citations as the oldest and youngest participant, respectively.
The Most Colorful group award was given to Domingo Lacson National High School, Most Disciplined to the Bacolod City NHS, and Biggest Participants, Mansilingan Agro-Industrial HS, the press release added.* back to top
Bears of Joy campaign on
The Bears of Joy campaign of SM will continue until January 5, 2014, and the public is urged to join the “Give a Bear, Get a Bear” project for orphaned, abused and abandoned children living under charitable care, a press release from the mall said.
Mall goers can purchase a pair of SM Bears of Joy for P200, and donate one. SM Foundation and Supermalls will collect all the donated bears and give them to children in charitable institutions or orphanages this Christmas, the press release added.*
