SJI boys foil USLS-IS 4-peat bid
in NOPSSCEA elem basketball

St. John’s Institute routed defending champion University of St. La Salle Integrated School, 83-64, to stall the latter’s bid for a fourth straight crown and capture the elementary NOPSSCEA basketball title, Sunday at the West Negros University Gym, a press release from SJI said.

The La Sallians started strong and dominated SJI, 26-18, in the first quarter behind their frontcourt trio of Jun Cary Besa, Earl Villarino and Kyle Ramos. Keeping the fight going for Huaming boys was Miguel Sarmiento, who knocked down two triples and added a two-pointer, for an 8-point opening quarter production.

 Both teams played on even terms in the second canto with the Baby Stingers still leading at the break, 39-33, as Jose Antonio Arguelles delivered two treys, while JB Co fired seven points for the Baby Falcons and added four inside points, the press release said.

Capitol cagers capture
Inter-Employees crown

Joemarie Bayhon scored 21 points to lead the Province of Negros Occidental past Negros Panay Sales, Inc., 90-85, and claim the title in the 1st LNA 7 Foundation-Basketball Coaches Association of Negros Inter Employees Open Basketball Tournament, Sunday at West Negros University Gym, a press release from BCAN said.

Coming off a 42-26 halftime lead, the Capitol cagers found themselves in a difficult situation as NePan launched a 19-10 rally in the third quarter to cut the lead at 52-45.

Providing scoring support to Bayhon were former UNO-R Rams Ernesto Cagayao and Marlon Talatala, who delivered 12 and 11 points, respectively, while former USLS Stinger Peewee added six markers while manning the backcourt. Fomer CSA-B Eagle Rex Bayer made his presence felt with 8 points.

PHL practical shooters win
23 gold medals in Thailand

MANILA - The Philippine practical shooting team returned to the country Sunday night, bringing home 23 gold, 21 silver, and 10 bronze medals from the Far East Asian Handgun Competition held at the THPSA Shooting Range in Pattaya, Thailand.

Sultan Kudarat Governor Suharto Mangudadatu, head of the Philippine practical shooting team and president of the Philippine Practical Shooting Association, said the country’s team competed against 489 shooters from 26 countries in the 25-stage, level 4 shooting event sanctioned by the International Practical Shooting Confederation.

Among the shooters who brought home the gold medals were those from the all-women Filipino team composed of Angela Ramos, Lydia Cuyong, Grace Aldonza, Mary Grace Tan, and Customs Collector Carmelita Talusan.
