USLS PLEDGES 9 MORE
The Negrense Volunteers for Change yesterday turned over the first 20 motorized bancas to fishermen victims of super typhoon Yolanda in Negros and Panay under its Peter Project II.
The Peter Project II has so far receive donations for 619 boats to be distributed to fishermen whose bancas were detroyed by “Yolanda”, NVC president Millie Kilayko said.
Ten boats donated by various individuals were turned over in Brgy. Daga, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, and another 10 boats donated by Oishi for Panay were turned over in barangays Tambaliza and Malangabang, and Sitio Looc in Concepcion, Iloilo, yesterday, she said.
Meanwhile, the University of St La Salle in Bacolod City has pledged an initial nine boats for the “Peter Project 2” for fishermen affected by super-typhoon “Yolanda” in Negros Occidental, a press release from the school said.
Kilayko and NVC member of the board Mariel Tolentino oriented the school community leaders on the project that was launched Nov. 18 in response to the growing need of the fishermen for new motor boats as source of livelihood, the press release also said.
Members of the college and integrated school administration, the Balayan-CEP, Institute for Negros Development, Business Resource Center and the Office for Student Affairs have signified their intention to contribute to the project.
The USLS Stingers Men’s Basketball team, under Rhoderick Samonte, director of the External Relations, was the first to pledge a “Stinger” boat, followed by other pledges from alumni batches and Lasallians, the press release also said.
Kilayko and Tolentino said the average cost of P20,000, or US$ 455, per boat is an easy goal if the rest of the community comes up with creative ways to generate financial help.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Marie Therese Jochico, said the Peter 2 Project will be promoted in various events of the USLS, like a forum with Filipino social innovators next month, the press release also said.

Bacolod observes 'Life Day'
A candle lighting ceremony was held at the lobby of the Bacolod Government Center yesterday in line with the Cities for Life Day observance, a press release from the city said.
Councilor El Cid Familiaran said in his welcome speech that the position of the city is in harmony with his advocacy, even before he was elected member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. He added that he supports the stand of Mayor Monico Puentevella against the death penalty, the press release also said.
Puentevella said he voted against capital punishment when he was still congressman. He thanked the Bacolod City Police Office and the Bacolod Parole and Probation Volunteer Aide Association for their support to the city against judicial execution, the press release added.*

Canadian workers donate
cash aid to Sagaynons

The Union of Northern Workers in Yellowknife, Canada, has sent a cash donation to help residents of Sagay City, Negros Occidental, recover from the devastation of typhoon “Yolanda”, a press release from promoters said.
The fund was channeled through the Rotary Club of Bacolod-North, that has been conducting relief operations particularly in coastal areas of Sagay, in coordination with the Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, a press release said.
The donation drive was initiated by Chris Potyok, regional vice president for the North Great Slave Region, after seeing the destruction on television. He is married to a Bacoleña, Estrellita Barbas-Potyok, the press release also said.
Home repair materials, solar lightings, and feeding provisions were distributed to residents of Suyak Island and Barangay Taba-ao in Sagay City Monday, and the Northern Workers in Canada, the RCBN and NONESCOST will assist in the relocation of some residents from the coastal areas in Sagay that have been declared as no-build zones, the press release added* back to top
