Tay Tung students win
in campus journ contests

Tay Tung's “The Clarion” was the overall champion in the high school category of the Division Schools Press Conference, held at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School auditorium recently, its press release said.

Several of its students also won in seven categories of the competition, on the theme “Campus Journalism and Transformational Leadership”. They were Kate Angelu Fortaleza, second place, newswriting in English; Ma. Concepcion Ponclara, eight place, feature writing English; Stuart Arnold Ng, third, copyreading in English;

Shann Nicole Sanz, fifth, copyreading Filipino; Francis Gregory Ng, fourth, editorial writing English; Johanna Denise Gonzales, second, sports writing English; Burgundy Blaze Cruz, third, photojournalism English; John Benedict Azarcon, third, editorial cartooning Filipino; and Victor Samuel Yu, third; Garcela Villalobos, second, and Bianca Isabelle Gaw Te, champion, best news presenter in radio broadcasting competition, the press release also said.

“The Clarion” was also awarded best in infomercial, best in technical application, with technical director, Gyanel Dave Nillos, and best in radio production in English.

The Bacolod City National High School was in second place, and the University of Saint La Salle-Integrated School, third, in the competition participated by 578 high school students.

The AL Jayme Elementary School was champion in the elementary level, with ETCS II, UNO-R and Tay Tung as second, third and fourth placers, respectively. It as participated in by 600 students.

Tay Tung students who won in the competition were Hans Benedict Gaw Te, first, newswriting English; Audrey Su, second, sports writing English; Mikey Vincent Vicente, first, editorial cartooning English; Eloisa Jane Espende, second, photojournalism English; Frances Tumaneng, third, photojournalism Filipino; Ziara Paguntalan, 10 th , feature writing English; Khloe Delfin, fourth, newswriting Filipino; and Angela Joyce Tan, sixth, sports writing Filipino, the press release also said.

The Regional Schools Press Conference is scheduled next month, the press release added.*

PCL-WV officers elected

The Philippine Councilors League Region 6 Federation of Officers from the six provinces and two highly-urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod elected its officers for 2013-2016 in Iloilo City headed by Councilor Mitchelle Patricio of Pilar, Capiz as regional chairman recently, its press release said.

The other officers who ran unopposed are Sherwin Sancheng of Iloilo province, regional vice chairman; Renante Nava, Antique, secretary general; Nelly Rentoy of Guimaras, treasurer; Jay Tejada of Aklan, auditor; and Wilfredo Tortosa of Negros Occidental, public relations officer, the press release also said.

Members of the Board of Directors who also ran unopposed are Apolinar Cleope,

Vicente William Tabanao, Erech Alocilia, Isabelo Acollador, Ricky Boluso, Em Ang, El Cid Familiaran, and Ronnie Ferrer.

The election was supervised by the Department of Interior and Local Government regional office, and attended by PCL national officers, headed by its president, Alma Moreno, and chairman Allan Zulueta. Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., Bacolod PCL president, was appointed member of the Comelec, and Board Member Raul Rivera, the League's island president, headed the Negros Occidental delegation, the press release added.*

BJMP, mall award winners
of 7th parol-making contest

The winners of the 7 th parol-making contest held by Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and Robinsons Place Bacolod were announced and awarded at the mall recently, a press release from the BJMP said.

They are the entries of the Kabankalan City Jail inmates, champion; Bacolod City District Jail Female Dorm, first runner-up; Binalbagan Municipal Jail, second runner-up; and Victorias City Jail, third runner up.

The entries of the inmates of Sipalay, Bago, and Isabela jails were fourth, fifth and sixth runners-up, respectively, while those of Binagbagan won as best in creativity, San Carlos – resourcefulness, and Kabankalan, related to the theme, the press release also said.

The 16 parol entries, that were crafted by inmates of the participating units based on the mechanics and criteria set by the event organizers, were displayed at the City Walk of the mall. Chona Gosiaoco, project coordinator, said the contest aimed to showcase the talents and artistry of the inmates and to support the developmental programs of the BJMP.

Mary Christine Tomas of Robinsons said P87,000 was allocated by the mall as cash prizes, with the champion receiving P20,000, the press release said.

Chief Insp. Gilbert Peremne, jail provincial administrator of Negros Occidental, thanked the mall for sustaining the project, and the jail units and inmates for their participation, the press release added.*

Victorias receives
DepEd recognitions

Victorias City in Negros Occidental received various awards at the “Harvest of Excellence” annual provincial search of the Department of Education at Sta. Fe Resort in Bacolod City recently, a press release from the city said.

These included a certificate of recognition for the highest transition rate of Grade 6 to Grade 7 (secondary level) in the Division for school year 2013-2014, and P10,000 cash incentive; the DepEd District I of Victorias as the “District with Highest Percentage of Schools with Increased Cohort Survival Rate” in the Division for 2012-2013, with P10,000 cash prize; and the “District with the Highest Completion Rate” in the Division for 2012-2013, and P50,000 in cash incentive, the press release also said.

District I supervisor Nelda Demegillo received the awards on behalf of the City and District I. Principal Teresa Asidoy of the Victorias North Elementary School received the school's award as “Gulayan sa Paaralan” third place winner, in the Division for S.Y. 2012-2013.

The awards were given by Schools Division superintendent Juliet Jeruta, who congratulated the winners for a job well done, and Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca for the City's achievement, the press release added.*
